INCLUSIVE DESIGN THINKING AS AN ENGINE OF ICT ORIENTED HIGH-LEVEL EDUCATION FOR BUILDING AN INCLUSIVE SOCIETY

Design thinking is a human-centered approach which helps to understand users, challenge assumptions, redefine problems and create innovative solutions. When Design thinking method comes to mind, people may think about products or services for the customers. But the truth is, that the process starts at earlier than the stage of product and services development. First thing that need changing is the culture in which people are working in innovative way. The environment should be nurturing the change and innovative way of thinking, taking into consideration inclusivity.

Especially in ICT environment it is very important to look at potentially excluded groups of users (e.g. earlier born, that are not that familiar with new technologies and online world. The technologies are developed by younger and technically advanced people and used by quite large group of non-technical and not so familiar with the latest technologies groups of users). In order to teach young ICT students to take in mind all kinds of inclusivity, we need to prepare the university culture first.

ICT technologies are present in our everyday life in almost all activities that we are doing. So we feel that is even more crucial to start in this kind of “culture change” with teachers and subsequently with students from ICT-oriented programmes, to bring great young minds into to world of technology, that will always have in mind inclusive groups of their customers when developing innovative solutions. That is why we want to strongly focus on university teachers at the beginning, to prepare the environment with them and test it afterwards also with the students.

Last but not least, design thinking focused on inclusive solutions (inclusive design thinking) is method to understand everyone and treat everyone with respect they deserve, so it is not only about the product, service, process, culture development. It is a concept which ensures that even people who are initially excluded can use new products and services.

Therefore, the main goal of the project is to bring inclusive design thinking methodology into the ICT oriented high-level education, focused on problem-solving of underrepresented groups to enhance the creation of inclusive innovative solutions for the society.

As the project focuses on use of design thinking to ICT oriented high-level education, the main target group is university teachers (university staff who teach – lecturers, assistant professors, or professors) dedicated to teaching ICT-oriented subjects. Preference will be given to subjects that provide students with the opportunity to work on projects.

Embracing Inclusive Design Thinking for a Progressive University Experience

Creating and developing an inclusive environment that benefits all of us, even though we may not be among the underrepresented groups of people, is one of the crucial challenges of our time that will shape our future. Based on this idea, members of the international Erasmus+ eduIDT project „Application of Inclusive Design Thinking in the Technically Oriented Subjects“, coordinated by the Faculty of Management and Informatics of University of Žilina, have focused their enthusiasm and skills over the past year on the use of Inclusive Design Thinking (IDT) tools in the educational process of students in technically-oriented programmes. In line with the project’s priorities, the aim was to create engaging and innovative internationally applicable course material using elements of Design Thinking applied to the problems of underrepresented groups. These materials are intended to help teachers of technically oriented subjects at universities to apply Inclusive Design Thinking methods in their teaching and thus to encourage students to think creatively and systematically and to focus when designing new solutions (applications, software) also on problems of minority groups because these solutions can be used not only by users from underrepresented groups but also by the general public.

Inclusive Design Thinking book:

• is a practical guide for university teachers of technically oriented subjects, which helps them, and their students focus on designing new solutions to problems of underrepresented groups. 
• contains an explanation of Inclusive Design Thinking, its process, phases, tips and tricks, and examples of methods that teachers/students/public can use to help address the problems in our daily lives.
• is available in eight languages (English, Croatian, German, Hungarian, Estonian, French, Spanish and Slovak).

In addition to the handbook, there are videos explaining the basics of Inclusive Design Thinking and templates for each method explained in the materials.

The authors consider the published materials dynamic and will adapt them based on feedback from experts and the public. Therefore, they invite all colleagues to contact them with suggestions for improvement or leave feedback on the project website. In the ongoing phase of the project, they will test the different methods with students and based on this, they will also publish recommendations for teachers to implement this methodology in education. 

The Erasmus+ project eduIDT consists of 9 partners from 7 European countries: University of Žilina (Slovakia), Tallinn University (Estonia), Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (Spain), Sveuciliste u Zagrebu (Croatia), Debreceni Egyetem (Hungary), IMT Atlantique Bretagne Pays de la Loire (France), Wilhelm Büchner Hochschule (Germany), Eggztra Innovations s. r. o. (Slovakia) and European Institute for Labour and Industrial Relations (Germany). The project aims to bring inclusive design thinking methodology into the technically oriented high-level education focused on problem-solving of underrepresented groups to enhance the creation of inclusive, innovative solutions for society.

INCLUSIVES DESIGN THINKING ALS MOTOR IKT-ORIENTIERTER HIGH-LEVEL-BILDUNG FÜR DEN AUFBAU EINER INKLUSIVEN GESELLSCHAFT

Design Thinking ist ein menschenzentrierter Ansatz, der hilft, Benutzer zu verstehen, Annahmen in Frage zu stellen, Probleme neu zu definieren und innovative Lösungen zu schaffen. Wenn die Design-Thinking-Methode in den Sinn kommt, denken die Leute vielleicht über Produkte oder Dienstleistungen für die Kunden nach. Aber die Wahrheit ist, dass der Prozess vor der Phase der Produkt- und Dienstleistungsentwicklung beginnt. Das erste, was geändert werden muss, ist die Kultur, in der Menschen auf innovative Weise arbeiten. Die Umwelt sollte den Wandel und die innovative Denkweise unter Berücksichtigung der Inklusivität fördern.

Insbesondere im IKT-Umfeld ist es sehr wichtig, potenziell ausgeschlossene Nutzergruppen zu betrachten (z.B. früher Geborene, die mit neuen Technologien und der Online-Welt nicht so vertraut sind). Die Technologien werden von jüngeren und technisch fortgeschrittenen Menschen entwickelt und von einer recht großen Gruppe von nicht-technischen und mit den neuesten Technologien nicht so vertrauten Benutzergruppen verwendet. Um jungen IKT-Studenten beizubringen, alle Arten von Inklusivität zu berücksichtigen, müssen wir zuerst die Universitätskultur vorbereiten.

IKT-Technologien sind in unserem täglichen Leben in fast allen Aktivitäten, die wir ausführen, präsent. Daher halten wir es für umso wichtiger, bei dieser Art von „Kulturwandel“ mit Lehrern und anschließend mit Schülern aus IKT-orientierten Programmen zu beginnen, um großartige junge Köpfe in die Welt der Technologie zu bringen, die bei der Entwicklung innovativer Lösungen immer inklusive Gruppen ihrer Kunden im Auge behalten werden. Deshalb wollen wir uns zu Beginn stark auf Hochschullehrer konzentrieren, mit ihnen die Umgebung vorbereiten und anschließend auch mit den Studierenden testen.

Nicht zuletzt ist Design Thinking, das sich auf inklusive Lösungen konzentriert (Inclusive Design Thinking), eine Methode, um jeden zu verstehen und jeden mit Respekt zu behandeln, den er verdient, es geht also nicht nur um die Produkt-, Service-, Prozess- und Kulturentwicklung. Es ist ein Konzept, das sicherstellt, dass auch Menschen, die zunächst ausgeschlossen sind, neue Produkte und Dienstleistungen nutzen können.

Daher ist das Hauptziel des Projekts, die Methodik des inklusiven Designs in die IKT-orientierte High-Level-Ausbildung zu bringen, die sich auf die Problemlösung unterrepräsentierter Gruppen konzentriert, um die Schaffung inklusiver innovativer Lösungen für die Gesellschaft zu verbessern.

Da sich das Projekt auf den Einsatz von Design Thinking in der IKT-orientierten Hochschulbildung konzentriert, ist die Hauptzielgruppe Hochschullehrer (Universitätspersonal, das unterrichtet – Dozenten, Assistenzprofessoren oder Professoren), die sich der Vermittlung IKT-orientierter Fächer widmen. Bevorzugt werden Fächer, die den Studierenden die Möglichkeit bieten, an Projekten zu arbeiten.

 

Buchprojekt unter dem Titel „Wir tragen Verantwortung für morgen“

Gefördert vom Land Hessen hat das EIAB vom 01.08. bis 31.12.2019 das Projekt „Nachhaltige Unternehmensführung in hessischen KMU“ durchgeführt. Bis zum Jahresende wurden in einem ersten Schritt 30 Unternehmen nach einem vom EIAB entwickelten Fragebogen nach ihren diesbezüglichen Aktivitäten befragt. Diese Projektphase ist abgeschlossen. Näheres ist dem Flyer zu entnehmen.

Seit Januar 2020 war das EIAB in einem zweiten Schritt damit beschäftigt, die Ergebnisse der Befragung auszuwerten. Leider hat sich zwar die für April geplante Veröffentlichung der Ergebnisse der Untersuchung auf Grund der aktuellen Ereignisse verzögert.

Die Herausgabe der Zusammenfassung der Ergebnisse des Projektes in einem Buch mit dem Titel „Wir tragen Verantwortung für morgen. Ausgewählte Beispiele nachhaltiger Unternehmensführung im Mittelstand“ wird nun aber am Hessischen Tag der Nachhaltigkeit, am 10.09.2020, erfolgen.

Eingeleitet wird das Buch von einem Vorwort des Hessischen Ministers für Wirtschaft, Energie, Verkehr und Wohnen. Es folgen zwei informative grundsätzliche Beiträge „Nachhaltigkeit geht uns alle an. Grundlagen der Nachhaltigkeit und der gesellschaftlichen Verantwortung in Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft“ sowie „Nachhaltige Geschäftsmodelle im Mittelstand“. Den Mittelpunkt des Buches bilden aber die Beiträge der nunmehr 37 teilnehmenden Unternehmen, die ihre Aktivitäten nachhaltiger Unternehmensführung in anschaulicher Form vorstellen.

Am 27.08.2020 erschien in den meisten südhessischen kostenfreien Zeitungen ein Interview, in dem über grundsätzliche Fragen nachhaltiger Unternehmensführung im Mittelstand gesprochen wurde. Das Interview wurde aus Anlass des Erscheinens des Buches „Wir tragen Verantwortung für morgen“ Ende August gegeben.
